Bed Bugs get their name because they are commonly found in beds but can also be found in other places where humans spend a lot of time including businesses, hotels, airplanes, and furniture. Bed bug infestations start within eight feet of a bed (mattress, box spring, headboard, bed frame, bedding material) but bed bugs can travel as much as 100 feet in a single night! If left untreated, an infestation can easily spread.

However, bed bugs have experienced a dramatic resurgence and there are worldwide reports of increasing numbers of infestations. Step (1):
- Dismantle the bed and stand the components on end. Things to look for are the bugs themselves, the light brown molted skins of the nymphs, or dark spots of dried bed bug excrement. Often the gauze fabric overlying the box spring must be removed for thorough inspection and treatment.
